Why a Good Y-Harness Is Better Than a Collar – for Almost Every Dog
We agree: training, raising, and relaxing walks are the foundation. But the equipment you choose also affects your dog's well-being and health. And that's where the Y-harness comes in.
1. What Does Science Say?
-
Neck & trachea: Pulling on a collar increases pressure on the larynx, trachea, and spine. Research shows that this also increases eye pressure (Pauli et al., 2006).
-
Small dogs: Extra sensitive; in them, chronic pulling can lead to tracheal collapse (O’Neill et al., 2020).
-
Even in adult dogs: Even if a dog walks nicely on a leash, an unexpected jerk can always occur – a cat crossing the street, a bicycle speeding past. Even then, all the force on a collar goes directly to the neck.
👉 A good harness therefore protects not only during the learning phase, but for a dog's entire life.
2. Why a Good Y-Harness Helps
Not every harness is a good harness – we completely agree on that. Many harnesses on the street are too heavy, constrict, or slip.
A lightweight, well-fitting Y-harness:
-
distributes the pressure over the chest and shoulders,
-
allows the shoulders to move freely,
-
prevents pressure on the neck,
-
is comfortable and safe, even during unexpected jerks.
- ensures that the dog does not have to step into it and does not have to go over the head
3. Common Concerns About Harnesses
-
“All harnesses are heavy and restrict movement”
→ True for poor designs. That is why we choose Happy Dog harnesses: lightweight, flexible, and anatomically shaped. -
“A harness makes dogs pull more”
→ Pulling is a behavior, not a characteristic of the harness. It requires training, just like with a collar. -
“A dog can also learn perfectly well with a collar”
→ Absolutely true. But even a well-behaved dog can suddenly put tension on the leash. Then the difference is: pressure on the neck or safely distributed over the body.
4. For Puppies: A Healthy Start with the Puppy Service
Puppies are extra vulnerable. That is why we offer a puppy service: throughout the entire growth period, your puppy will always get the right harness parts, and at the end, a brand-new harness in the colors you want. This way, your puppy grows not only in behavior, but also in comfort and health.
5.
Nuance: When a Collar Can Still Be Useful (Temporarily)
Although we clearly prefer a well-fitting Y-harness, there are situations in which a collar can still be an option:
-
Medical reasons – for example, after surgery or with skin problems on the chest where a harness would chafe.
-
Very short potty breaks – when the dog hardly walks on a leash and there is no chance of pulling.
-
Training and acclimation – some dogs find a harness scary at first; a collar can temporarily be an intermediate step.
-
Practical convenience – for dogs that usually walk off-leash and only need to be on a leash for a very short time.
-
Extra safety – a collar with a tag can be useful as an extra backup in case a dog ever escapes from its harness.
👉 Important here: a collar is only safe when there is no tension on the leash. As soon as pressure or a jerk occurs, you run the risk of damage to the trachea, nerves, and vertebrae. That is why the Y-harness remains the most comfortable and healthy choice for most dogs – even for adult dogs that walk nicely on a leash.
